The company Terra Viva, led by Andrea Abad Bartolome in Ibiza, represents an innovative model for addressing growing water scarcity in the Mediterranean. In collaboration with the CERES Foundation, the entrepreneur has developed a smart irrigation system based on IoT sensors and weather data, capable of automating irrigation in real time and significantly reducing water consumption, while simultaneously strengthening crop resilience.
The technology is made open-access and accompanied by free training programs, removing barriers to adoption by farmers and young professionals in the sector. In parallel, Andrea coordinates TerraCert, an Erasmus+ project involving nine partners in five European countries, aimed at creating the first European certification for regenerative agriculture, based on micro-credentials and Europass. The program, which will offer 21 modular courses, aims to equip the new generation of farmers with certified skills in agroecology, sustainable soil management, and resilient entrepreneurial practices.
At the core of Andrea’s work is a human-centered and participatory vision of innovation: change as a shared process, peer-to-peer learning, and the possibility of regenerating degraded landscapes through practical solutions and strong engagement of rural communities. Her case demonstrates that sustainable change requires both innovation and conservation, new tools, and traditional knowledge. The entrepreneur was one of two winners of the second edition of the Woman Greening Food Systems Award from the PRIMA Foundation, which recognizes the work of women in driving the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems in the Mediterranean.
She was also recognized in 2025 in Copenhagen as one of the “Top 50 Farmers” for the most innovative regenerative farmers from 22 European countries.
