The Pieraccini Farm, managed by Samantha Pieraccini in Bronte, on the slopes of Mount Etna, represents an example of resilient and sustainable agriculture. Despite an environmental context characterized by strong climatic contrasts (winter flooding and summer drought), Samantha has successfully revitalized the family business, whose roots date back to the late 19th century, by embracing the principles of agroecology and organic farming. Since 2012, she has undertaken a process of renewal, focusing on crop diversification as an adaptation strategy. Across its 3 hectares, the farm cultivates Bronte DOP pistachios, olive trees, fruit, vegetables, and wild edible plants. Farming practices are closely linked to water availability: traditional crops such as pistachios and olives are grown under dry farming conditions, while other species are irrigated using low-consumption systems.
The agroecological approach is implemented through practices that protect soil health and ecosystems, such as permanent grass cover, minimum tillage, intercropping, and fertilization with organic manure, reducing the need for pesticides. In pistachio cultivation as well, traditional techniques are adopted, such as alternating-year production to naturally restore plant vigor.
The farm, oriented toward short supply chains, sells its products at farmers’ markets and through purchasing groups, thereby strengthening the local economy. Participation in networks such as the Biodistretto Valle del Simeto reflects a commitment to sharing knowledge and experiences with other farms, while environmental education workshops have been developed to promote a culture of sustainability among younger generations. In the future, the farm aims to create a multifunctional space combining rural hospitality and education, demonstrating that the integration of tradition and innovation can make agriculture both economically viable and socially valuable, even in complex contexts.
