Within the framework of the Adapta Agroecología program, led by the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture (SEAE), which promotes agroecological production and marketing practices to support adaptation to climate change in the Spanish agricultural sector, Can Genover Farm (Vilanant, Alt Empordá), managed by livestock farmer Marisa Reig, represents a concrete example of how farming and livestock management can integrate agroecological strategies to enhance quality, resilience, and biological sustainability.
The main challenges addressed involve the sustainable management of soil, water, and biodiversity in a context characterized by drought, desertification, and climate change. In response, the agroecological approach allows natural ecological processes to be mimicked, increasing the farm’s capacity to respond to climate risks, while fostering networks among farmers, consultants, and researchers for knowledge exchange and the dissemination of resilient practices.
At Can Genover, interventions include agroecological management of the 265-hectare estate with minimal crop rotation, extended rational grazing using the Voisin method, selection of adapted species, preservation of traditional knowledge, and rainwater harvesting to create micro-aquatic ecosystems. The farm owns 160 Aubrac cattle, well adapted to the local climate, and maintains hedges and flowers to enhance biodiversity. The farm contributes to the project’s objectives by developing shared agroecological technologies, increasing farmers’ adaptive capacity, and raising societal awareness of the importance of sustainable practices, including the consumption of organic products.
