Mas la sala cooperative
Julia Soler represents the community cooperative Mas La Sala, in Sant Pau de Segúries, Ripollès, Girona, founded in 2020. The cooperative works toward ecosystem regeneration, resilience, culture, and cooperation. In particular, Mas La Sala is engaged in the agroecological transition, moving from a conventional agricultural system to a regenerative agricultural and livestock system.
Soil regeneration and the maintenance of its fertility and biodiversity are achieved through agricultural, livestock, and forestry techniques that naturally nourish plants and protect the soil from interventions that could disrupt its biological processes. At Mas La Sala, rational grazing of Ripollès sheep and Angus cows is practiced. This livestock management approach aims to select the optimal time for grazing on a specific plot, based on knowledge of pasture regrowth and the animals’ needs and welfare.
Grazing also supports forest management on the property. A biointensive vegetable garden is cultivated without plowing or agrochemical products, using crop rotation, with soil health as the primary goal to produce highly nutritious vegetables. Agroforestry is practiced, combining fruit tree and companion plant plantations with grazing sheep to increase synergies between animals, which feed on fresh pasture, and plants, which benefit from livestock manure. The cooperative also aims to be a cultural hub for the territory and its community, with a library, La Lluerna, representing a decentralized cultural space. Julia Soler of Mas La Sala was recognized in 2025 in Copenhagen as one of the “Top 50 Farmers” for the most innovative regenerative farmers from 22 European countries.
