Can Purtell
Can Purtell, founded in 2020 in Ibiza by Jessica Dunlop, is an agroecological farm experimenting with crops and practices for a farming system that prioritizes soil conservation, adapts to the island’s hot and dry climate, and draws inspiration from nature. The farm uses plants, companion crops, and regenerative practices to improve soil fertility and crop health. It is a true ecosystem restoration project, where abandoned farmland is brought back into productive use to enhance soil health and biodiversity in the fields. Today, the farm cultivates 8 fields, totaling approximately 5 hectares, with annual expansion aimed at restoring additional farmland and recovering threatened local flora and fauna species. The goal is to restore a thriving agricultural ecosystem and create resilience and a healthy agricultural biome. The farm experiments in fields irrigated with rainwater with wheat and traditional cereal varieties adapted to the climate, hedge crops with carob, fig, and almond trees, wild cultivars, drought-resistant forage plants, grazing for sheep and goats, and biofertilizers. Land management and use are provided by landowners who support the revival of agriculture on the island and see their lands become productive again.
Can Purtell primarily produces flour, which is sold directly to local bakers and restaurants, as well as forage and grains for livestock, milk, and meat. The farming practices are based on traditional island agriculture, agroecological and regenerative principles, regenerative machinery, and modern pedology, aiming to increase drought resilience in a system that prioritizes soil, nature, and biodiversity. In 2025, the farm was recognized in Copenhagen as one of the “Top 50 Farmers” for the most innovative regenerative farmers from 22 European countries.
