Located in Castrofilippo, in the province of Agrigento, Azzalora Bio is an agricultural company that represents a model of sustainable farming, blending family tradition with innovation. Originating from a small inherited plot of land, it made the decision to convert to organic farming in the 1990s, under the guidance of Martina Maurer. Overcoming initial challenges, the farm focused its production on Italia IGP table grapes from Canicattì, a crop perfectly suited to the local pedoclimatic conditions.
Today, it is an approximately eight-hectare fully organic enterprise that, in addition to grapes — exported to European markets — cultivates the indigenous Perciasacchi wheat and other fruit and vegetable crops, while also offering a home delivery service. The farm adopts advanced agroecological practices, including the use of mycorrhizae, green manure, and spontaneous grass cover to enhance soil fertility. Crop protection is entirely natural, using sulfur, zeolite, and potassium bicarbonate, along with the innovative technique of early vineyard covering, which significantly reduces copper-based treatments and enhances environmental sustainability.
Azzalora actively promotes biodiversity by introducing local varieties and melliferous plants, creating a balanced ecosystem. Its sustainability vision is comprehensive, encompassing investments in renewable energy and a rural hospitality facility that, starting in 2026, will offer experiences such as vineyard walks, dinners in the vineyards, and educational programs.
Azzalora Bio is also a reference point for social engagement and territorial cooperation. It collaborates on inclusion and environmental enhancement projects and is a founding member of the Biodistretto Agroecologico Valle dei Templi and a member of the Sicily Agroecology Coordination. This extensive network of collaborations consolidates its role as a leader in responsible agriculture, demonstrating that the combination of peasant roots, research, and social values is the true strength of Sicily’s future agriculture.
